Indonesian Ad for Indonesia National Resurgence Day


20 May 2008 is the day where Indonesian as a Nation commemorates 100 years of Indonesian National Resurgence.

That day, 100 years ago, on 20 May 1908, for the first time, Indonesian people dreamt for their freedom as a Nation. And 20 years later, on the same date, 20 October 1928, Indonesian youth, declared and dreamt for “One Nation, One Country, and One Language”.

Now, 100 years later, where the dream becomes reality, the dreamt has lost their meaning.

Until I watched this ad, I realized the meaning of Indonesian National Resurgence in the globalization era …

Age versus Dream


A couple days ago, when I have finished my work, my colleague asked me of my future dream.

She asked of my dream in the corporation world, whether I would like to aim higher position or stay with the current one.

I told her that I always aim high, in every position that I had. “Aim High” is my value in the corporation world. But I also have other dream, to continue my handicraft business that I started 2 years ago where up to now I still got an order from my 1st and only one buyer besides open a small handicraft shop.

What surprised me was her comment that my dream was due to of my age, where according to her it’s less challenging compare to the position in the corporation world.

I was speechless at that time, still couldn’t get the connection between age, entrepreneurship and challenge.

As far as I know, become an employee were safer than running a business, because the responsibility is totally different.

When am become an employee my responsibility is only to myself, while when am running my own business, I have the responsibility to keep my business still going on, and to take care of my employee who work with me.

The risk is totally different, as long as the company is health enough than we do not have to worry. While running our own business, the risk is greater; we must have to running the business to be profitable.

Therefore, compare to age ….? What a nice thought ….

I told her that when I said I put my aim high, it means that I always strive to get exceeding performance result, I always strive to get higher position, and I always strive to get higher income …

But it doesn’t mean that when the opportunity to get higher position with higher income waiting at my front door, I will automatically open and welcome the opportunity. There’s one thing that become the basis of my decision. I call it “my corporation value”.

My value for not taking the credit of others as mine, my value for not stealing someone’s idea, my value for not taking the bribe, my value for not let others look down at my company during an interview, that is what I call my “corporation value”.

Higher income could not replace my peacefulness if it is against my corporation value.

So … back to my dream versus my age. Well … this time I have to admit that “age, experience, knowledge and value in life” really talk.

….and suddenly I felt lonely in the middle of the crowd ………

Honda Ad ....


Am a lil bit bored today, maybe because of the effect of long week end, or maybe because of I keep asking my brain to come up with new program that I have to present in front of my lovely boss or because I push myself to finish my new book “Outsmart”.

Well, for sure, I don’t know the answer.

I only know that since the first time I watch this ad, I already fall in love with the creative team. Please do take a look of this Honda Ad, if you haven’t.

If you thought that the people who set up a room full of dominoes to have them knocked over later was amazing, you haven’t seen anything yet. There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in these images.

Everything that you see happened in real time exactly as you see it …

The recording required 606 takes and in the first 605 takes there always was something, usually of minor importance, that didn’t work. It was necessary for the recording team to install the set-up time after time and it took several weeks working day and night to achieve this effect.

The recording cost 6 million dollars and it took 3 months to finish, including the engineering design of the sequence.

The duration of the video is only 2 minutes, but every time that Honda shows the commercial on British television, they make enough money to support any of us for the rest our our live.

However, this commercial has turned out to be the most displayed in the history of the internet.

Honda executives think that it will pay for itself simply because of the free showings. Honda is not paying one cent for you to see it.

When Honda senior execs viewed it, they immediately approved it without
hesitation-including costs.

There are only six Honda Accords built by hand in the whole world, and to the horror
of Honda engineers, the recording team disassembled two of them for the recording.

Everything you see in the sequence (besides the walls, floor, ramp and untouched Honda Accord) is part of those two automobiles. The voice is that of Garrison Keiller.

The commercial was so well received by Honda executives when they saw it, that their first comment was how amazing the computer graphics were. They almost fell out of their chairs when told that the recording was real without any graphics manipulation.

By the way, about the wind shield wipers in the new Honda Accords, they are sensitive to water and designed to start working as soon as they get wet.

Human Rights of Indonesia May 1998 Tragedy


All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
-Article 1 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)-



Ten years ago, I learned something that changed my life. I learned that the above declaration of Human Rights, were just another written declaration.

Learn that the declaration only works where no Power or Money or Politics involved into that.

Ten years ago, May 1998, people throughout the world read the tragedy which happened in Indonesia. Where human beings lost their mind, lost their dignity and lost their rights.

Started on 12 May 1998, where four university students were shoots to death during student demonstrations at Trisakti University (and later Semanggi tragedy). Then it became like a snow ball where on 14 May 1998, Jakarta and its surrounding were on fire, where public transportation, buildings, residential houses, supermarket, public utilities were burnt down and the barbarian people unleashed a series of unbelievable action.

The tragedy that changed my own beliefs of Indonesian culture which written in my student book.

Starts on that day, there’s an empty space in my mind which longing to be feed in with the answer of that tragedy, of the initiator, the director, the reason, the why.

Also starts on that day, every May in 10 (ten) years, the family of the victim, get together, raise their prayer and ask for the justice.

I remember clearly that day. I just visited my father who had hospitalized at Dharmais hospital, when my mother called me to leave that place immediately and told me to be careful. Arrived at my work place, an American bank and got announcement from the HR Director who got the reminder from American embassy to let the worker went home straight away.

I remember that day clearly, where I could not visited my father for almost 4 (four) days because Jakarta was in chaos, where I live in fear because every time got the announcement that we have to be ready because a group of unknown person tried to entered our housing.

Remembered the story of my brother in law, who had to walk far away from his office to his home and saw the same incidence, where there’s a man who became the initiator to burnt the building, the supermarket, and became the first one left the building after the unknown people stole the food or money, then started his action to another building. Remembered the story of my father, who told me, that through his hospital window, he saw an empty truck stopped in front of the alley, and a lot of people from that area get in into the truck which took them to another place. Remembered the story of my friends who lost their house, who runs from the rapes and saved by the unknown people, who run from this country …..

That day and 10 years after that, the rights of the people and the victim as a human being nearly or I may say have forgotten.

No one in this country, the political person, the government, the intellectual can give the answer, or even try to fight for the rights, the rights as human being.

Maybe because actually they who run this country or they who gave their intellectual actor were part of the tragedy; maybe is always the right answer for the one whom longing for justice.

Maybe … someday … we will get the answer ….

Well, it’s always easy to point our finger to somebody else and it’s always difficult to point back the finger to our self.

But have we realized that human rights are not just for the big things, it is something that we deal in our life, in our day to day activity.

The rights of our maid, the rights of our employee, the rights of our parents, the rights of our children, the rights to speak, to choose, the rights of freedom.

We can not win the big things if we never try to win the smallest things……

Read Bean Rest. vs Customer Service Slogan


Customer is the king” ….

How many of you that never read or heard the above slogan ?

I believe that most of grown people have ever read or heard the above slogan and never say the disagreement of the above statement.

Except me …; I am not the one who buys in the whole idea of the above slogan even though my career path starts in service industry.

Most of the service practitioner take that slogan without even understand the reason behind the statement and how to put that into reality.

Last night, we were having dinner at Red Bean Restaurant, Kelapa Gading. Since we are not a smoker, automatically we chose the non smoking area.

Not within a minute, I smell a cigarette flavor in the air. Then I realized that there’s a family who sat behind me, light her cigarette.

Well.. I didn’t mind somebody smoke when we were sitting in the smoking area, but since I was in the non-smoking area, I felt annoyed with the situation. So my husband asked the waitress just to confirm that we didn’t choose the wrong area.

Then the lady stopped her smoke activity, but it was only temporary. Not more than 30 minutes, she continued her smoke.

Short stories, we claimed to the restaurant manager. Not because we hate smoker, we complained because the manager ignored our right as a customer.

But what surprised me was the manager’s comment, that he didn’t have the right to ask the lady top stop because there’s no sign of “non-smoking area”. So my husband pointed the sign of “non-smoking area” around the restaurant.

Can you imagine the answer ? The restaurant manager told my husband that customer is the king and he didn’t have the right to implement the rules of “non-smoking area”.

…. SPEECHLESS ….. that was my first reaction …

No wonder the implementation of “smoking” and “non-smoking” area in Indonesia ever went well. The entire fine was just only a “written” fine, no one got fine by the police. Not because the police do not have the guts, it’s because the police officer were the one who loves to smoke.

The smoking area versus non smoking area only applicable to certain place, but if the customer didn’t obey the rules, the person who have the authorization to implement the policy also don’t have the guts by hiding through “The Customer is The King” statement.
Yes, the customer is the king, but the customer also has to follow the rules, the policy. If the customer didn’t want to follow the rules or the policy, doesn’t mean that the authorize person have to follow the customer’s.

Customer is the king means that as a service provider we have to understand customer’s right when we implement or make a policy. As a service provider we have to be objective and honest in delivering our product or policy.

Whilst as the customer, we also have to follow the rules, the policy. We can not be the ego centric person, like that lady.

I’m wondering if she goes to other country will she follow the “smoking” rules. I bet that she will follow the rules.

Suddenly I remembered my former boss comment, who is an expatriate, when the government announced the smoke regulation.

Cynically he told me that it’s a waste. People in Indonesia never follow the rule, especially where “money” is the God in Indonesian rule…

2008 ICCA Award .... and Us


The greatest gift I got from GOD, the fruit of the sky is the limit, my team won the prestigious award in Indonesia Contact Center Association. Not just my team but also my company finally be there, be on the stage.

We have not got the Platinum award yet, but for the rookie in the association, won the silver award for The Best Supervisor, The Best Manager and The Best Operation, plus bronze award for The Best Team Leader, it’s a beautiful gift I’ve got before finally leave the operational and concentrate on heading new division.

Finally ……after the painful years, after all the “office politic”, we got the recognitions form the association, from the outsider.

Can’t forget the face of my team when I was walking to the stage, when I said thank you for giving me the best gift I’ve ever have at the end of my time in that division.

Well …..Another period of “The Sky is The Limit” is waiting at the other door …

The Sky is The Limit


Phew … it is easy to say, but difficult to realized that finally the sky has the limit when the time is come.

I always believe that stranger that come across our life, or job opportunities which knock my front door, is part of God’s plan to enrich ourselves as a human being.

Well …. It’s about time to move on now …. Time to deal with “The sky is the limit” again.

Can’t wait to play with my beloved blue sky ..

Yup … after more than 10 years dealing with operational things, I’ve got an offering to drag myself to the nutshell, 180 degrees with operational things; The offering of heading a new division; the division where everybody were skeptical that it will work in telecommunication industry.

Can’t say anything yet, it’s still too early to judge. I just pray to God to still give me the passion and the spirit to make the changes, where the sky is the limit.

IFFA and Murphy's Law

My CEO from my previous company always said that to me every time he found out something wrong during his review on our result. Or sometimes during our little chit-chat, he always quotes that law to emphasize the decision which based on wrong process.

It’s quite a long time I never heard that kind of comment since my last meeting with him, before he’s been transferred to Hongkong, our regional HQ.

I nearly forgotten his lovely Murphy’s Law I visited IFFA exhibition at Kemayoran; the exhibition to boost Indonesian furniture and craft export.

Like other International Trade Fair, the first day was the opening day, where the minister opens the trade and the visitor limited only for the buyer. Other visitor or retailer usually will come on the 3rd days. No retail transaction allowed during the trade, but people know that on the last day of exhibition, the trader will sell the product to the visitor.

Since I always visit the International Trade Fair, or even participated as a trader in the International Trade Fair, then all the rules looks like the same for me. Off course there’s differentiation of rules for the trader and the visitor, but the bottom line is, everybody knows the rule and the sponsor who run the trade also knows how to apply the rules.

This time, during IFFA, the sponsor applied the new rules of attire. Visitor must wear office attire during their visit to IFFA,

Therefore when the sponsor officer did not allow me to enter the exhibition building, because I wore short pants, I didn’t mind.

But something bothering me then, firstly because the registration officer didn’t say anything when they saw my attire, secondly because I saw other visitor with jeans and T-shirt were allow to enter the building.

I was curious, therefore I went to the Information center to ask, how short the short pants rules was. She looked at my pants then said that it should be okay. So I went back to the officer who rejected me, asked the same question. He were gasp with my question then said that it was a difficult question, before told me that the length should be up to the knee and finally let me enter the exhibition arena.

The worst part, when I was in the exhibition area, I saw the exhibitor wore ¾ jeans and T-Shirt plus sandals. Then I spotted other visitor wore short pants which shorter than mine. I was speechless…

As an exhibitor in International Trade, I know that we were not allowed to wear jeans and t-shirt. We have to respect the visitor and most of all, we have to respect ourselves.
Anyway …it’s their choice, not mine.

What really bother me and concerned me was the regulation implementation. Sometimes, when we made the rule, we did not think of the possibility that will occur because of that regulation.

We never examine every single aspect before we put that “rule” into “regulation”. We just sit like the KING and voila, “this is my order, you have to follow” no matter the rule is appropriate or not.

Well ... end of the story, I told my friend who were one of the board directors and told him how silly was the regulation and how bad was the interpretation.
